Thrush is an extremely common condition in women and nearly all women have suffered from it at one point in their life.

Thrush is a vaginal infection caused by a yeast like fungus called Candida Albicans. The Candida Albicans fungus is present in all women and it is kept in check by the body by the natural and harmless bacteria in the vagina; however sometimes this balance is disrupted and the Candida Albicans can multiply too quickly causing the symptoms of vaginal thrush.

The symptoms of vaginal thrush are usually an itching and irritation around the vaginal area, the vaginal area may be reddened and swollen. This may also be accompanied by a white and thickened discharge from the vagina. Thrush is actually a harmless condition, it can however be painful and uncomfortable.

If you suffer from this condition on a regular basis it is worth knowing that there are a number of natural ways in which to reduce the likelihood of getting this condition. Thrush is known to thrive if you are taking a course of antibiotics, as they kill a lot more bacteria than the one for which they are being used e.g. vaginal bacteria, so be sure only to do this when absolutely necessary. It is also very important to make sure to wash yourself with products that are not too harsh as these can kill the friendly bacteria in the vagina.

Whilst there are a number of over the counter remedies for thrush which are based on medication, a natural remedy can work just as effectively. It may also be that are pregnant and therefore don’t want to use any medications. In this instance, the best natural remedy for thrush is natural live yoghurt. This is because the bacteria in this yoghurt works in the same way as the natural bacteria in the vagina to reduce the amount of Candida Albicans in the vagina. Natural live yoghurt, as well as treating the infection, can also provide relief to the symptoms as it can cool and soothe the irritation. Just be sure not to use a flavoured yoghurt.
